Thanks for the “shout out” Bob, but I’m not sure how much help it will be to others. I suspect, as you’d previously suggested, that you may well be the last person on earth to use WEP. 🙂

I’ve just about got my code done for my medications alarm clock. What’s left is the pesky business of Daylight Savings Time .. figuring out in advance when it’s approaching and then doing the two minute plus or minus “juggle”.

Another big thank you Alan, you saved the day. I’ve been running around in circles with this for DAYS. I actually needed it for a large 7 segment clock I built. Now it connects to my wifi and gets the correct time every hour. Clock is working perfectly!

So if anyone reads this and can’t get their esp8266’s and esp32’s (probably other boards) to connect to the internet, check your settings as Alan described.

Onto the next project! lol

I’ll see if I can get that turned on. If it fixes my connection issue, I’ll reply back to confirm and to help any others in the future that might read this. (although it sounds like I might be the last person who is using WEP) LOL

WEP is nearly the closest thing to no security. No security is the front door of your house wide open. WEP is the front door mostly closed .. not actually closed, certainly not locked, just mostly closed. WEP was replaced by WPA 20 years ago or so. It’s no surprise ESP devices don’t support it, it’s a VERY rare device of ANY sort that supports it. You want to set your router to use WPA2. This has been the security method of choice for 15 years or so. When you do this, you may have to change any other devices using your router .. MAY have to. I suspect most modern devices will just figure it out. WPS is a “passwordless” system not really relevant to this discussion; on or off makes no difference. Pick some flavour of WPA2 and you’ll be fine.

Thanks for replying. I see WEP 64 bit for security. (not sure if that’s what your asking) It also says WPS is disabled. ??? I’m not sure what either of those are. lol

I’ve never had an authentication problem with dozens of ESPx devices. Five different routers now. One thing comes to mind .. what sort of security do you have enabled on your router (when it fails to connect) ?

Finally got it to work. Turns out my esp826 was not connected even though it said it was. The only way I can get any of my esp8266 or esp32’s to connect is if I take the password off my ssid. It has to be “unsecured” or it WILL NOT CONNECT! Set it back to secured and it no longer connects.

Posting this in case it helps someone in the future. Anyone else have this problem??

Mine will not obtain the time. It says wifi is connected but then says failed to obtain time.

I kept the same server and the “0” for the time offset after trying my own. Nothing I try will get the time.

It’s only day 4. Maybe one of these days I’ll figure this out. Back to searching google!

You dont need it esp32 can sink to a ntp time provider online no extra hardware needed.

Hi.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any tutorials with the 7-segment display and the ESP8266.
